Teachers Stories: Olivia Dixon

Real Teacher- Real Stories. Read the story of Olivia Dixon, from Liverpool, aged 30

Well, I moved to Dubai just a little over 4 years ago. I had just come out of a 3-year relationship, and went through a really tough breakup and just decided that I needed a change, to get away from it all, and start fresh!

One of my friends had moved to Abu Dhabi the year before and basically convinced me to make the move. It took me about 4 months to secure a job, I conducted my interview via skype and 3 months later I was on an Emirates plane with a one-way ticket to DXB airport.  It was a scary experience at first, moving somewhere entirely new, starting from scratch, but looking back now, it was the best decision I ever made. I have had experiences beyond my imagination. I started off as an English school teacher, and now work as head of department. Aside from the career progression and much better salary package, the lifestyle and social life here is incredible. A typical week involves starting the working week on a Sunday around 7am, finishing at 2.30pm. Typically Tuesday nights are for Ladies night, which means, girls’ night out with lots of free cocktails. Thursdays are the last working day of the week here and I usually spend the weekends at Brunch or at one of the many beach clubs in Dubai.

Another MAJOR up-side of teaching in Dubai is all the holidays and long weekends we get. They have a lot of religious holidays and national holidays here that we don’t get in the UK which is always an extra bonus. For those thinking of moving to the UAE to teach, I would say simply say- DO IT. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you will create everlasting memories as well benefiting financially.
